CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team handed No. 22 Charleston a 3-0 loss Sunday in non-conference action.

The win is the second in a row for The Rock over quality opponents after posting a 3-1 win over previously unbeaten Cedarville earlier in the week.

Sunday's game was the final non-conference game that Slippery Rock will play during the regular season. The Rock moves on to the conference slate with a 5-1-1 overall record and a 0-1 mark in league action.

Charleston, which was ranked 22nd in this week's Division II national rankings, drops to 4-3-1 overall with the loss.

The Rock used timely scores and capitalized on their chances Sunday to earn the 3-0 win despite being outshot by the Golden Eagles.

Dom Francis, Josh Brake and Michael Ramirez all tallied goals, while Joshua Gray picked up an assist and Chris Zier earned his second straight win and first shutout in goal.

Charleston finished the game with advantages of 9-6 in total shots and 12-3 in corner kicks, while The Rock posted a 6-1 edge in shots on target.

Francis opened the scoring just 2:22 when he capitalized on an errant pass by a Charleston defender and beat Fabian Veit for what would end up being the only goal The Rock would need.

Brake made it 2-0 seven minutes later when he headed in his first goal of the year directly off a throw-in from Gray in the 10th minute.

The 2-0 margin stood all the way until the 84th minute when Ramirez added another insurance tally for his third goal of the year.

Zier was forced to make just one save in earning the shutout, while Veit made three saves and allowed three goals for Charleston.

Slippery Rock opens the remainder of the PSAC schedule Oct. 2 when it travels to Pitt-Johnstown for a 4 p.m. game.
