SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team got a pair of goals from Michael Ramirez, including an overtime winner, to defeat West Virginia Wesleyan 2-1 in double overtime Tuesday in non-conference action at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The Rock (3-0-1) trailed the Bobcats (2-2-1) 1-0 until a Ramirez header off a cross from Joshua Gray in the 69th minute tied the game at 1-1 and eventually sent the game to overtime.
An altercation between Slippery Rock player Stephen Donnelly and Bobcat player Matthew Brown midway through the first overtime led to cautions for both players and a red card for Donnelly, which forced The Rock to play down a man for the remainder of extra time.
Despite playing down a man, The Rock posted a 5-0 edge in shots during the first 10 minute extra period and managed to hold West Virginia Wesleyan without a shot in either overtime.
Ramirez capitalized on a Rock corner kick midway through the second overtime and headed home the game winner after a perfect ball from Gray on the corner with 6:29 to play.
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 24-8 in total shots and 9-5 in corner kicks. Both teams finished with five shots on goal.
Rock keeper Joe Agerskow earned the win with a near flawless performance. He made a diving, one-handed save in the final minute of regulation that kept the game even at 1-1 and set up the overtime. He finished with four saves to improve to 3-0-1 in his first year as The Rock's starter.
Derek Ayers nearly matched Agerskow in goal for West Virginia Wesleyan, making a leaping save in the first minute of overtime to keep the game going. He finished with three saves in the loss.
The Bobcats opened the games scoring in the 29th minute when Joe Ferraracci scored into the upper corner of the net after taking a pass in the middle of the box from Brown.
West Virginia Wesleyan posted a 2-0 edge in shots on goal in the first period.
Tuesday's game marked the first home game of the season for Slippery Rock and the fourth non-conference game of the year. The Rock will open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action this Saturday when PSAC newcomer Seton Hill visits for a 1 p.m. game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
During the game Tuesday, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced that Slippery Rock received votes in this week's Division II national poll.
