ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team closed the 2012-13 season with an 80-48 loss at No. 8 Gannon University Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from the Hammermill Center.
Slippery Rock finishes the season at 4-22 overall and 3-19 in PSAC games. Gannon advances to the postseason, where it will be the No. 1 seed in the PSAC West, with a 26-3 overall record and a 20-2 mark in league games.
Wednesday night marked the final game in the careers of Rock seniors
Erinne Cunningham,
Christa Wodarczyk and
Emilee Vitez.
Wodarczyk led the team in her final outing with 10 points and five rebounds. Cunningham added nine points and Vitez chipped in four points and two rebounds.
Alexas Brown capped The Rock's top performers with seven points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 29.0 percent from the field (18-of-62), 17.9 percent from beyond the 3-point line (5-of-28) and 63.6 percent at the free throw line (7-of-11). The Rock forced 20 turnovers and lost the ball just 17 times, but was outrebounded by a 42-29 margin.
Gannon was led by a 17-point performance from Brittany Batts to pace four players in double figures. Jen Papich scored 12 points, while Kelsey McCoy and Nettie Blake each added 10 points. Blake grabbed eight rebounds and Kelly Sundberg handed out 12 assists.
Gannon took nine less shots from the field than Slippery Rock but was hot from the opening tip, finishing the game shooting 56.6 percent from the field (30-of-53), 44.4 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-18) and 92.3 percent at the free throw line (12-of-13).
The Golden Knights scored the first five points of the game and jumped out to a 17-4 lead eight minutes into the game. They pushed the advantage up to 34-15 with 4:11 to play in the first half and led by 19 at 39-20 at halftime.
The lead grew to 27 points when Gannon opened the second half with an 8-2 run to make it 49-22 with 17:49 to play.
Slippery Rock could get it no closer than 21 points the rest of the way.
Cunningham finishes her two-year Slippery Rock career with 512 points. Vitez, the only four-year member of the team, finishes her career with 340 points and 448 rebounds. Wodarczyk finishes her two-year career with 120 points, 103 of which came this season.
