SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team snapped an 18-game losing streak Saturday with a 68-57 win at NAIA member Lourdes University.
The Rock (1-5) trailed by eight points at halftime but held the Gray Wolves (3-6) to just 17 points and only five made field goals in the second half.
The game was the second meeting between the two teams and each has now won the away game in the series after Lourdes defeated SRU in Morrow Field House last winter.
The Rock placed four players in double figures, led by a game-high double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds from
D'Asia Chambers.
Aidan Geise added 12 points and eight rebounds,
Rebecca Olkosky chipped in 11 points and
Jazmyne Frost added 10 rebounds.
Megan Hardiman finished with eight points and four assists and
Erica Aiello added five points and three assists.
Slippery Rock shot a season-high 55.1 percent from the field, connecting on 27-of-49 attempts. The Rock were 36.8 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (7-of-19) and 38.9 percent from the free throw line (7-of-18).
Lourdes was led by a 16-point showing from Tiffany Scott. Courtney Slepko added 13 points and Tarynn Hampton chipped in 10 points.
The Gray Wolves were 31.1 percent from the field after shooting just 16.1 percent in the second half, connecting on 19-of-61 attempts in the game. Lourdes was 36.8 percent from 3-point (7-of-19) and 70.6 percent at the free throw line (12-of-17).
Slippery Rock jumped out to a six point lead early in the first half and pushed the advantage out to 18-11 with 11:35 to play in the opening half.
Lourdes responded with a 15-2 run to take a 26-20 lead with 6:10 left before the intermission and then pushed the advantage out to eight points at the break, 40-32.
The Rock burst out of the gates in the second half with a 20-5 run to take a 52-45 lead with 10:47 to play.
Lourdes clawed back to within five points on two occasions, but Slippery Rock slammed the door and pushed the advantage out to double figures in the final four minutes of the half.
The win snaps a losing streak that began with the final 13 games of the 2012-13 season and included the first five games of this year.
Slippery Rock returns home to conference play when No. 2 Gannon visits Morrow Field House Dec. 4 for a 6 p.m. game.
