BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The 15th ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team earned its fifth consecutive win with a hard fought 2-1 victory on the road at Bloomsburg Friday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves its overall record to 8-1-1 and its PSAC mark to 3-1. Bloomsburg drops to 3-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league games.
The game was back and forth for the entire 90 minutes, including a late frenzy of corner kicks by the Huskies in which their goalkeeper registered two shots. The game was also very physical, with a total of 44 fouls called and seven cautions handed out, including a red card after time expired for a Bloomsburg player.
The Bloomsburg goal was the first allowed by Slippery Rock in its last four games. The Rock now owns a 21-6 advantage in scoring over opponents this season and owns a PSAC best 0.58 goals against average as a team.
Declan Brennan and
Brandon Chiu each tallied goals for Slippery Rock, while
Dom Francis and
Michael Ramirez recorded assists.
Chris Zier made six saves in goal for Slippery Rock to win his fifth consecutive game. He has allowed just three goals and now owns a PSAC best 0.56 goals against average and a .900 save percentage.
Bloomsburg keeper Bernie Roell made seven saves in the losing effort.
Bloomsburg posted advantages of 16-15 in total shots and 12-3 in corner kicks, while Slippery Rock managed a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.
Brennan opened the scoring with his first goal in a Rock uniform when he headed in a crossing pass from Francis in the 23rd minute to put Slippery Rock up 1-0.
The 1-0 margin stood until halftime with Slippery Rock posting a 5-2 edge in shots on goal in the opening period.
Bloomsburg tied the game in the 62nd minute when Spencer Conrad scored an unassisted goal that just found the net over Zier.
The Rock wasted no time in regaining the lead when Chiu tipped in a pass from Ramirez just 1:08 later for what would stand as the game-winning goal.
The Huskies put on a late charge, but Zier and the Rock's back four was up to the challenge.
Slippery Rock will have little time to rest as it will be back in action tomorrow with another physical challenge at PSAC rival Lock Haven. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
