CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The team of senior
Janelle Krantz and freshman
Kasey Love advanced to the quarterfinal round of doubles competition to headline the Slippery Rock University effort over the weekend in Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Atlantic Region women's tennis tournament action.
The No. 5 seed in the tournament, Krantz (pictured) and Love defeated host Charleston's Anne Pena and Courtney Pierron by a 9-7 score in first-round action. The Rock duo then eliminated the Davis & Elkins duo of Julia Hoehn and Halima Michaels by an 8-2 count in the second round.
The road to a regional title came to an end in the quarterfinals as the third-seeded California (Pa.) duo of Ramona Czakon and Jade Pondicas won an 8-2 decision over Krantz and Love.
SRU's other doubles entry, senior
Elisabeth Yetiskul and junior
Lauren Coggins, won their first-round match by an 8-4 score over West Liberty's Alex Barr and Zineb Houssaini. Yetiskul and Coggins then lost an 8-0 decision to Mercyhurst's eighth-seeded tandem of Sarah Baich and Caroline Bristol.
Yetiskul led The Rock effort in singles competition as she won two matches before being eliminated. Yetiskul beat West Liberty's Christina Pauley 6-2, 6-4 in a first-round match and knocked off Charleston's Mallika Mali 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.
Sixth-seeded Tanya Timko of Indiana (Pa.) won a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Yetiskul in third-round action to deny her a berth in the quarterfinal round.
Coggins and Love both won opening-round singles matches before being eliminated by a second-round setback.
Coggins defeated Bluefield State's Isabella Cubillos by a 6-1, 6-2 score in the opening round before she dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to 11th-seeded Katie Eaton of Indiana.
Love scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over West Virginia State's Jordan Kerns in the opening round before she lost a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 second-round decision to Mercyhurst's Baich.
Krantz lost her first-round singles match, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 to 13th-seeded Raissa Wischi of West Liberty.
The Rock return to action as a team Oct. 7 when they host Kutztown in a 10:30 a.m. match. The Green and White, 0-1 in dual matches, close out the fall portion of their 2012-13 schedule the following day with a 10 a.m. home match vs. Millersville.
