SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 22nd-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team scored two first half goals 16 seconds apart and held on to defeat Wheeling Jesuit, 2-1, Sunday in non-conference action at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 4-1-3 on the season. Wheeling Jesuit events out at 4-4 overall.
The Rock got goals from
Stephen Donnelly and
Peter Boylan at 10:41 and 10:57 and the Cardinals answered with a goal in the 33rd minute to account for all the scoring. Neither team could find the net in the second half after WJU keeper Cody Thompson made five saves in the period and Rock keeper
Joe Agerskow made three saves.
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 21-13 in total shots, 9-6 in shots on goal and 7-4 in corner kicks.
Agerskow, making his first collegiate start, earned the win after allowing one goal and recording five saves. Thompson took the loss, allowing two goals and recording seven saves.
Donnelly opened the game's scoring in the 11th minute off a short corner.
Joshua Gray played the corner kick into
Drew Donoghue, who found Donnelly in the middle of the box to bury it into the upper right corner of the net.
Just 16 seconds later after Slippery Rock regained possession off the kickoff,
Brandon Chiu found Boylan streaking down the left wing and Boylan took one touch before beating Thompson low to record his first collegiate goal.
That tally would stand as the game-winner after Ignacio Fernandez scored off an assist from Nicolay Netskar in the 33rd minute to account for the final goal of the game.
Sunday's game was the third in a stretch of six consecutive home games for Slippery Rock, which will play back to back conference games Friday and Saturday at James Egli Field. California (Pa.) will be the opponent Friday for a 1 p.m. kickoff, while Shippensburg will visit Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
The homestand ends with an Oct. 3 showdown with Bloomsburg before The Rock hits the road again Oct. 6 for a trip to East Stroudsburg. That will mark the first away game since Sept. 11.
