SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team settled for a 3-3 double overtime tie with Tiffin University Sunday after the Dragons battled back from two goal deficits on two occasions and notched the tying goal with 46 seconds left in regulation.
Sunday's game was the fourth soccer game of the weekend played at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium as part of the SRU Soccer Tournament. Ashland defeated Mercyhurst 1-0 in the opening game Sunday.
With the tie, Slippery Rock moves to 0-0-2 overall on the season, while Tiffin moved to 1-0-1. The Rock played Ashland to a 1-1 double overtime tie in the opening game of the tournament Friday, while Tiffin handed Mercyhurst a 4-0 defeat Friday.
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 18-14 in total shots and 11-6 in shots on goal. Both teams registered six corner kicks.
Chris Davis scored his first two goals of the season to lead The Rock. Both goals were assisted by
Mike Roopchandsingh after the speedy pair found themselves on odd-man breakaways throughout the day.
Anthony Jack also connected on his first goal in a Slippery rock uniform to cap The Rock scorers.
Clayton Master made two incredible saves, including one diving play with less than four minutes to play in the final overtime session. He finished the day with three saves.
Cedric Bruce-Kotey tallied the final two Tiffin goals, while Edison Benda added a goal and an assist to lead the Dragons.
Jeremy Ashley earned the tie in goal after recording eight saves.
Jack opened the game's scoring in just the sixth minute when he buried a rebound after a free kick. The Rock would take its first two-goal lead of the game less than 10 minutes later when Davis converted off a perfect setup from Roopchandsingh at the 14:01 mark.
Tiffin cut the deficit in half and made it 2-1 when Benda scored into the lower left corner of the net off a crossing pass from Jon O'Brien in the 35th minute.
Benda's goal was the final tally of the first half. Slippery Rock posted advantages of 8-4 in shots and 2-1 in corner kicks in the period.
Davis and Roopchandsingh connected on their second goal of the game early in the second half to give SRU another two goal edge, 3-1, in the 50th minute.
That margin stood for nearly 25 minutes until Bruce-Kotey took a pass from Benda and scored on a three-on-two breakaway to make it 3-2 in the 75th minute.
Bruce-Kotey's tying goal came with just 46 seconds left in regulation when he recovered a rebound after a long throw in and scored with a high shot to the inside post.
Tiffin registered three shots in the overtime periods, including a laser from Karl Jones that Master fought off late. Slippery Rock recorded two shots in the extra periods.
The Rock will play their third straight home match to open the season Wednesday when Seton Hill visits Jim Egli Field for a 1:30 p.m. non-conference match.
