SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 double overtime draw against Ashland University Friday night in the second game of the SRU Soccer Tournament at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The Rock led 1-0 after an early goal from
Joshua Gray, but the Eagles were able to net the equalizer when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Both teams had chances down the stretch in regulation and in the overtime sessions, but Rock keeper
Clayton Master and Eagle keeper Evan Bader were up to the challenge.
Friday's game was the second of the evening at the stadium, as Tiffin and Mercyhurst played earlier in the night in the first of a four-game slate being deemed the SRU Tournament. Tiffin handed the Lakers a 4-0 defeat and will face Slippery Rock Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Mercyhurst will play Ashland at noon.
Gray's goal came at the 20:21 mark when he wrapped a free kick over the wall and into the upper right corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Things stayed that way the rest of the opening half and Slippery Rock took a 6-5 edge in total shots into the break. Ashland posted a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks in the half.
The game took a dramatic turn in the second half when Ashland's Guilherme Karaoglan was sent off with his second yellow card in the 53rd minute. From there, things got chippy on both sides of the ball. The game finished with a total of nine cautions, one ejection and more than 40 fouls.
One of those fouls called on Slippery Rock at the 75:10 mark was deemed to be inside the box and Jamie Dollar went high left just out of the reach of Master to notch the game at 1-1.
Michael Ramirez had a point blank look at the net during the first overtime session, but Bader stood his ground and made the save.
A last ditch effort from Slippery Rock came when
Max Aronica's header went just wide with two seconds left in the second overtime to end the game.
Slippery Rock finished the match with advantages of 20-14 in total shots and 9-7 in shots on goal, while Ashland posted a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Friday's meeting was the ninth all-time between the two teams and ended in the first tie between the programs. Ashland now leads the all-time series 7-1-1.
