ERIE, Pa. – Freshman midfielder Ryan Lutke drilled a shot into the upper left corner of the net off a throw-in with 39 seconds left in the second overtime period Thursday to give Slippery Rock University a 2-1 victory over hosting Gannon University in quarterfinal action of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championships.

With the win, the sixth-seeded Rock, who improved their season record to 10-3-6, earned a return trip to Erie Saturday for an 1:30 p.m. semifinal match against second-seeded West Chester at Mercyhurst University.

The Rock are in the conference semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons and second time in three seasons under current head coach Michael Bonelli.

Gannon, the third seed in this year's PSAC playoffs and the No. 1 team in the current NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional ranking, saw its record fall to 12-5.

Thursday's loss was the Golden Knights' second in as many meetings with The Rock this fall and their fourth in the last five matches overall.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net until the 76th minute of regulation. SRU's Josh Brake opened the game's scoring when he put home a far post header off a Joshua Gray corner.

Gannon tied the score at 1-1, and eventually sent the game into overtime, seven minutes later on a goal by junior defender Ivan Tolic off an assist from Gavin Linsell.

Both teams had good scoring opportunities in the first 10-minute overtime period and the initial nine-plus minutes of the second extra stanza but neither was able to put the ball in the net until Lutke scored the game-winning goal.

Gannon ended the game with a 21-13 advantage in total shots and an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Each team was awarded five corner kicks. The Rock were on the high end of a 19-16 fouls comparison.

Senior goalie Clayton Master recorded seven saves and allowed one goal to be awarded the win for SRU, while Gannon goalie Jason Barbarino was tagged with the loss despite recording five saves.

Thursday's win assured SRU of its second double-digit win total in Bonelli's three seasons as head coach, The Rock's fourth double-digit win season in the last five campaigns and the seventh in the last nine seasons.

It's worth noting that, prior to the current string of success, the Green and White had won 10 or more matches only once in a 21-season span that ran from 1983-2004.
