Rock set for playoff battle at Gannon

Slippery Rock men's soccer will travel to Gannon Thursday for a PSAC quarterfinal match at 3:30 p.m.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team will travel to Gannon Thursday for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference quarterfinals. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

Playoff Situation: A collapse by Gannon down the stretch gave Mercyhurst the regular season title and West Chester the No. 2 seed, with both of those teams earning the byes into the semifinals. Gannon slipped to No. 3, followed by Millersville at No. 4, California at No. 5 and Slippery Rock at No. 6.

The winner of the SRU-Gannon game will play West Chester Saturday in the semifinals at 11 a.m. at Mercyhurst. The winner of the Cal-Millersville game will play Mercyhurst at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The winners of the two semifinals will play for the title at noon Sunday at Mercyhurst.

Admission: The PSAC office mandates a $7 charge for adults and a $2 charge for students for all playoff games. All students from PSAC institutions with a valid ID will be admitted free.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock enters the game with a 9-3-6 overall record and a 4-3-2 mark in the PSAC. The Rock is riding a two game winning streak and is 3-0-1 in their last four games.

Slippery Rock is outscoring opponents 33-16 and outshooting the opposition 283-224. Chris Davis leads the team with six goals and two assists. Stephen Donnelly ranks second with five goals and two assists and Michael Ramirez is in the middle of his best season with four goals and two assists. Brandon Chiu has three goals and two assists, including the game-winner last week at Gannon. Joshua Gray and Mike Roopchandsingh each have two goals and three assists and Ryan Lutke and Thad Madzelonka have three goals to cap the top scorers.

Clayton Master has started 17 games in goal for SRU and is 8-3-6 with eight shutouts. He has allowed 14 goals for a goals against average of 0.76 and has made 72 saves for a .837 save percentage.

Scouting the Golden Knights: Gannon won its first nine games of the year and jumped all the way up into the top five in the national rankings. Since then, the Golden Knights have limped home losing four of their last seven, including the two final regular season games to SRU and Mercyhurst. Gannon brings a 12-4 overall record and a 6-3 PSAC mark into the playoffs.

Gannon is outscoring opponents 35-20, but is being outshot 243-228. Robbie Bennett leads the team with nine goals and six assists, while Tyler Hollingsworth has added eight goals and two assists and Sean Pike has five goals and six assists. Alex Perri has six goals and three assists and Adam Sharbaugh has four goals and two assists to cap the top scorers.

Jason Barbarino has played every minute in goal for Gannon and is 12-4 with six shutouts. He has allowed 20 goals for a 1.22 goals against average and has made 86 saves for a .811 save percentage.

Head Coaches: Michael Bonelli is in his third season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program. Bonelli has posted a record of 27-17-9 in his three seasons and has now taken Slippery Rock to the conference playoffs twice. Prior to his time at SRU, Bonelli spent five seasons as an assistant coach at the Division I level, with stints at Northwestern and Lafayette. He received a bachelor's degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland in 2004.

Rob van Rheenen is in his 16th season as the head coach at Gannon, where he has led the team to a 162-114-14 mark during his tenure. He was a standout player on the Gannon men's team in the 1980s, earning two All-America honors. He still ranks third on the all-time scoring ledger at Gannon with 166 points and is a member of the Gannon Sports Hall of Fame.

Series History: Slippery Rock owns a 20-9-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 3-1 win last fall and a 2-1 win last week.

Last Meeting: (Box Score) Brandon Chiu scored the game-winner off a crossing pass from Stephen Donnelly in the 68th minute to lead Slippery Rock to an upset win over then 12th-ranked Gannon last Tuesday in Erie.

The Rock led 1-0 early on a goal from Ryan Lutke in the 15th minute, but Gannon tied the game before halftime with a goal from Tyler Hollingswoth.

Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 20-18 in total shots and 6-4 in shots on goal. Gannon managed a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Clayton Master earned the win with three saves for SRU, while Jason Barbarino took the loss with four saves for Gannon.
