LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team closed the regular season with a 1-0 double overtime win at Lock Haven University Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
Thad Madzelonka scored the game-winner into the lower left corner of the net with 5:43 to play in the second overtime after taking a perfect setup from
Chris Davis and
Zach Hall.
The win improves Slippery Rock to 9-3-6 overall and 4-3-2 in PSAC action. Slippery Rock has clinched a PSAC playoff berth and will play in the opening round Tuesday on the road at Gannon. Lock Haven finishes the year with an overall record of 6-10-1 and a PSAC mark of 2-7.
Slippery Rock finished the game with a 14-6 advantage in shots, while Lock Haven earned a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Clayton Master earned his eighth shutout of the year in goal for SRU with three saves. Chris Frederick took the loss for LHU after recording one save.
Both teams created opportunities throughout the game, but each could only generate one solid scoring chance during regulation, which Master and Frederick were able to deny.
The game-winning play was a counter attack with Hall bringing the ball up the right wing and playing a long cross into the left side of the box. Davis chested the ball to the foot of Madzelonka, who beat Frederick one-on-one to the left corner for the win.
Slippery Rock finishes the regular season as the No. 6 seed in the conference and will play on the road at No. 3 seed Gannon in the opening round. Complete seedings below.
