BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team settled for an unprecedented sixth double overtime tie of the year Saturday night after playing to a 0-0 draw at West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Rock moved to 7-3-6 overall on the year, while the Bobcats moved to 11-3-1 with their first tie of the year.
Entering the game Saturday night, West Virginia Wesleyan was sitting in fifth in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings, as announced earlier this week by the NCAA Selection Committee. The top four teams in the region qualify for the NCAA Tournament at the end of the regular season.
The tie for Slippery Rock Saturday established a new school record for ties in a single season. The only other time in history that SRU had at least five ties was in 1954.
Clayton Master finished the game, his seventh shutout of the year, with eight saves in goal to lead Slippery Rock. His counterpart, Derek Ayers, made two saves in goal for the Bobcats.
West Virginia Wesleyan finished the game with advantages of 15-4 in total shots and 8-2 in shots on goal. Slippery Roc posted a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Rock will close the regular season with road trips to conference opponents No. 6 Gannon Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and Lock Haven Saturday at noon.
