SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Millersville University Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Slippery Rock led 1-0 at halftime on a goal from
Blake McChesney, but Andrew Dukes tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second half and then scored the game-winner with 1:11 remaining in the first overtime period to cap the comeback. Dukes long shot hit the far post and deflected into the net off an assist from Bryan Werner.
The loss was the first overtime game of the season that has ended in anything other than a tie for Slippery Rock, which has now played in six overtime games. The Rock drops to 6-3-5 overall and 2-3-2 in PSAC games. Millersville, the defending PSAC champion, improves to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in PSAC games.
Saturday's game was a tale of two halves as Slippery Rock posted a 6-5 edge in shots and led 1-0 after the opening 45 minutes. Millersville came out firing in the second half and posted a 14-4 edge in shots in the final 45 minutes of regulation. The Marauders finished the game with a 20-12 edge in total shots, a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 14-6 edge in corner kick attempts.
Clayton Master made seven saves in goal for Slippery Rock and
Stephen Donnelly was also credited with a team save, while Brad Benzing earned the win with three saves in goal for the visitors.
McChesney put Slippery Rock on the board in the 14th minute when he put home a rebound from a
Michael Ramirez shot that hit the cross bar.
Dukes tied the game in the 63rd minute with a perfect shot from 25 yards out that snuck just inside the far post.
His overtime winner came from a similar location along the right wing and just slipped past Master before hitting the post and bouncing into the net.
Slippery Rock will play one final home game during the regular season when it welcomes Lake Erie College to Mihalik-Thompson Stadium for a 7 p.m. match Tuesday. The Rock's seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
