LEECHBURG, Pa. -- Former Slippery Rock University wrestler and longtime Kiski Area High School Head Wrestling Coach Chuck Tursky became the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League's all-time leader in career wins last Friday when his team beat backyard rival Burrell High School, 60-14, in a home match.
The win was Tursky's 449th and moved him past retired Connellsville High School coach and fellow Slippery Rock graduate Tom Dolde Sr.
In the photo to the right, Tursky (center) is joined by fellow SRU wrestling alumni (from left) Tom McGarity, Steve Roberts, Mark Schaukowitsch and John Stroup, who were on hand to help him celebrate his record-setting win.
Tursky, who coached at Burrell for seven years before taking over at Kiski Area in 1986, took setting the record and doing it against his former team all in stride, according to a stort that appeared in last Saturday's Valley News Dispatch.
"I got into coaching for a lot of different reasons, and none of them was to get a record," Tursky said in the story written by Rick Bruni Jr. "A lot of those guys from my first couple of years at Burrell were here tonight. What a great thing to share it with them as well as the newer guys."
The presence of former Burrell and Kiski Area wrestlers at last Friday's match caused Tursky to get a little choked up, according to Bruni Jr.
"I haven't seen some of the people here in as much as 25 years," Bruni quoted Tursky as saying.
Longtime Kiski Area assistant coach Chris Heater presented Tursky with a plaque, signed by current and former wrestlers.
"It's always amazing having a coach this great to look up to as you're growing up and then to finally have him coach you," current Kiski Area standout Matt McCutcheon said in the Valley News Dispatch story. "I've always looked up to him. He's always working hard to make us better. It would've been nice if the match was closer, but I'm sure it's the same feeling for him."
Kiski Area recorded five more victories last Saturday to improve its season record to 15-0 and increase Tursky's wins total to 454.
