SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team scored a goal in the 68th minute and was able to escape with a 1-0 win over Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match Friday at Egli Field.
The Rock (3-4-0, 2-3-0 PSAC) posted advantages in every statistical category and had a number of chances throughout the final 15 minutes, but could not find the equalizer.
SRU finished the game with advantages of 18-10 in total shots, 8-2 in shots on goal and 9-8 in corner kicks. Bloomsburg (2-4-1, 2-1-1 PSAC) was called for 13 fouls and three cautions, while Slippery Rock was whistled for nine fouls and four cautions.
The game-winning goal came on a set piece in the 68th minute when Blomsburg's Frank Dineen was able to score into the lower left corner of the net off a free kick from Fran Miller. Dineen shielded his defender and Rock keeper
Timothy White and was able to slip the ball inside the post.
Slippery Rock had multiple challenges down the stretch, including a bullet from
Cody Clark with just under five minutes to play that ricocheted off the right post.
The game opened with each team playing to a nearly even opening 45 minutes in a scoreless tie. The Rock posted a 5-3 edge in shots and both teams were awarded four corners in the opening period.
After the break, Slippery Rock was in control of the match for all but a stretch of five minutes where Bloomsburg had three corner kicks and multiple looks, culminating in a goal on its only shot on target in the entire half.
The Rock finished the second half with a 13-7 edge in total shots and a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Friday's game was the first game of the season played on the grass at Jim Egli Field.
Slippery Rock will have little time to rest with East Stroudsburg visiting Egli Field Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. PSAC match.
