ASHLAND, Ohio – A last ditch effort from goalkeeper
Clayton Master on a corner kick was saved and No. 20 Ashland University handed the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team a 1-0 defeat in the season opener for both teams Thursday evening.
Master joined the play in the 88th minute for a corner kick after The Rock trailed 1-0. His shot attempt was good, but Ashland keeper Justin Nolan moved to his right and made the save to seal the game.
The game was close throughout, with neither team generating many scoring chances and the two teams combining for seven yellow cards to halt the rhythm of the game.
Ashland finished the game with advantages of 13-6 in total shots, 5-1 in shots on goal and 7-6 in corner kicks.
Kenneth Fultz led the way for Slippery Rock with three shots, while Christian McChesney and
Chris Hall each had one shot each.
Master made two saves and The Rock defense was credited with two saves as well for a total of four team saves. Nolan made one save in the winning effort for Ashland.
The hosts scored the lone goal of the game in the 76th minute when Jamie Dollar scored into the lower left corner of the net off a short free kick pass from Mitch Deyhle.
Slippery Rock will open its home schedule and look for its first win of the season Sunday when it host Washington Adventist at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium at 5 p.m. The game will also serve as a breast cancer awareness game, with donations being accepted at the gate with each entrant receiving a raffle ticket. A separate raffle will also award prizes of $350 cash, a $500 scholarship and a 32-inch HDTV.
