SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of its weekend series vs. visiting West Liberty (W. Va.) University with 3-1 and 5-1 wins Sunday at Jack Critchfield Park.
The wins extended SRU's current win streak to seven games and improved the Green and White's season record to 14-8.
Unlike their 7-0 and 12-1 wins Saturday over the Hilltoppers (5-17), The Rock had to work to record Sunday's wins.
A two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning by senior shortstop
Adam Jury (right photo) broke a 1-1 tie and gave SRU the win in the first game.
In Game 2, The Rock scored five unanswered runs to overcome an early 1-0 deficit.
Freshman right-hander
Lou Trivino picked up the Game 1 win and improved his season record to 2-0 after he allowed one earned run on three hits, struck out five and walked two in the first five innings.
Classmate
Ryan Oglesby recorded his third save of the season by retiring the Hilltoppers in order in the final two innings.
Sophomore southpaw
Joby Lapkowicz struck out seven, did not walk a batter and allowed one unearned run on five hits in the first four innings of Game 2 to get the win and improve his season record to 2-1.
Senior southpaw
Jason Steen struck out four and allowed one hit in the final three innings to pick up his first save of the season.
The Rock offense collected a total of 16 hits in Sunday's games, led by a three-hit, three-RBI effort by junior right fielder
Derek Carr. One of his hits was an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning that plated the tying run in Game 2.
Jury was one of four Rock players who finished the day with two hits.
SRU will be idle until Friday, when it is scheduled to host Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival Clarion University in a 1 p.m. twinbill at Critchfield Park.
Notes: Friday's twinbill vs. Clarion concludes an eight-game homestand for The Rock, who are unbeaten in six home games this spring and own a 114-54 (.679) record in the eight-year history of Critchfield Park … Friday's twinbill will be the first of three The Rock is scheduled to play in the span of three days. SRU will travel to Clarion for a 1 p.m. doubleheader next Saturday, then host Shepherd (W. Va.) University in a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader next Sunday, April 3 … The Rock is 9-4 this spring against NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rivals is scheduled to face only regional foes in the final 28 games of the regulart-season schedule.
