Second half runs lead Kutztown by Rock, 50-47

Danielle Smith posted a double-double with game highs of 18 points and 17 rebounds, but SRU saw a late comeback attempt fall just short in dropping a 50-47 decision to Kutztown.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team turned a 23-15 halftime deficit into a 50-47 comeback win over Slippery Rock University Sunday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action at Morrow Field House.

With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in PSAC play. Kutztown improves to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in league action.

The Rock placed three players in double figures, led by Danielle Smith with game highs of 18 points and 17 rebounds. Jasmine Cooper added 13 points and Paris Thomas chipped in 11 points and a team high five assists.

Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 35.1 percent from the field, connecting on 20-of-57 shots, including 3-of-18 from behind the 3-point arc (16.7%). The Rock was 4-of-6 from the free throw line and posted 38 rebounds.

Kutztown was led by three players in double figures, including a double-double effort by Steph Zewe with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Ashley Wood topped the scorers with 16 points and Andrea Sisson added 11 points.

The Golden Bears made 20-of-60 shots from the floor for a 33.3 percent efficiency, including 1-of-7 from the 3-point arc (14.3%). The visitors were 9-of-12 at the charity stripe and pulled down 42 rebounds.

Slippery Rock scored the first four points of the game and never trailed in the opening half. The game was tied on three occasions, the last one coming at 10-10 with 12:51 left in the half, before SRU put together a 13-5 run to take a 23-15 lead into the intermission. The Rock held Kutztown to just five points in the final 10 minutes of the half.

The lead grew to nine points for SRU in the beginning of the second half when Cooper knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 26-17 with 18:18 to play

From there, Kutztown put together an 11-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 28-26, with 14:50 to play. After a layup from Smith tied it at 28-28, the Golden Bears used another 5-0 run to push out to a 33-28 advantage.

Slippery Rock battled back with its own 6-0 run to regain the lead, 34-33, with 11:22 to play. The Rock pushed the lead out to four points on a Cooper 3-pointer with 9:44 to play before the Golden Bears took over.

Kutztown put together a 10-0 run to take a 45-39 lead with 3:21 to play. From there, the visitors pushed the lead out to nine points at 49-40 with just over a minute to play before Slippery Rock mounted a comeback in the final minute.

The Rock chipped away at the lead, scoring seven points in the final minute, but could not get a shot attempt off after a missed free throw from Kutztown's Ashley Wood with just one second left on the clock.

Slippery Rock will hit the road next weekend for more PSAC crossover action, traveling to Bloomsburg Dec. 9 and Mansfield Dec. 10.
