MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team was unable to capture its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory Saturday, as SRU lost 88-66 at Mansfield.
The loss, which was The Rock's sixth-straight defeat, drops Slippery Rock's record to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in the PSAC. Mansfield improved to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
For the game, The Rock shot just 31.7 percent (20-for-63) while Mansfield hit 49.3 percent (34-for-69) of its attempts. Mansfield also held the rebounding advantage 47-34.
Senior forward
Danielle Smith led Slippery Rock with 14 points and four rebounds. Senior guard
Sherita Stanley added 13 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Junior guards
Paris Thomas and
Erinne Cunningham both handed out five assists. Thomas also made three steals.
The Rock began the contest with a 10-9 advantage after a three-pointer from Thomas gave SRU its only lead of the game at the 16:04 mark in the first half. However, Mansfield quickly retook the lead and proceeded to open up a 10-point lead (25-15) over the next five minutes thanks to a 14-5 run.
Slippery Rock fought back and trimmed the 10-point deficit to just four points (27-23) with nine minutes to play in the period before Mansfield regrouped and ended the half on a 20-12 spurt to take a 47-35 lead into halftime.
Mansfield kept its momentum going in the second half and led by as many as 24 points en route to the 88-66 victory.
Slippery Rock will take a week off to focus on its final exams before returning to action 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19 vs. Charleston at Morrow Field House.
