KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University's bid for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference football championship came up short Saturday afternoon as the 24th-ranked Rock lost a 21-14 decision to eighth-ranked and hosting Kutztown University.

The loss was SRU's second in as many weeks and gave the Green and White an 8-3 record to cap the regular season.

Kutztown, which won its first PSAC championship in school history, improved its season record to 10-1 and assured itself of a berth in the NCAA playoffs.

Backup quarterback Marshall Vogel spelled starting signal caller and All-America candidate Kevin Morton, who was injured midway through the second period, and completed 25 of 39 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns to lead the winners' 413-yard offensive attack.

The Rock gained 353 total yards, led by a 19-of-39, 233-yard, one-TD passing effort by senior quarterback Cody Endres.

Senior wide receiver Devin Goda (pictured) caught six passes for 67 yards and one TD, redshirt sophomore wideout John Schademan had four catches for 71 yards and senior wideout Kevin Sanders caught four passes for 39 yards.

Junior running back Akeem Satterfield celebrated his return to action after being sidelined four weeks by a knee injury with a 25-carry, 103-yard, one-TD rushing effort for The Rock.

SRU had several opportunities to take firm control of the game and secure the victory, but failed to take advantage of several chances to put points on the board and/or hold Kutztown in check.

The Rock moved 74 yards in 11 plays on the game's opening drive to take a quick 7-0 lead. Satterfield capped the drive with an eight-yard run at the 10:05 mark of the first quarter.

Three plays later, The Rock got the ball back as senior strong safety Jayson Nickson picked off Morton at the SRU 40-yard line.

The Rock offense was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, though, and had to punt the ball back to the Golden Bears.

SRU appeared to be in prime position to pin the hosts deep in their own territory and possibly add to the early lead when Rock punter James McCombie placed a 42-yard punt deep inside Kutztown territory and redshirt sophomore Brandon Burley downed it at the Golden Bears' 1-yard line.

But, unfazed by being buried deep in their own territory, the Golden Bears marched 99 yards in eight plays to tie the score at 7-7 with 2:42 left in the first quarter. Morton hit Erik Frazier for a 41-yard TD to culminate the drive.

Morton, a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Award presented to the top D-II player in the nation, sustained a knee injury in the process of throwing the TD and did not return to action. He finished the day with two completions in four attempts for 46 yards and one TD, as well as one interception.

The INT by Nickson snapped a string of 141 consecutive passes Morton had attempted without being picked off.

McCombie again pinned Kutztown at its own 1-yard line early in the second quarter to ultimately set the stage for a golden scoring opportunity.

The Rock had the ball at the Kutztown 16-yard line midway through the second quarter after Kutztown punter Nathan Fehr shanked a kick that traveled only three yards.

Three plays later, The Rock was forced to settle for a 28-yard field goal attempt by Kurt Brackman. The boot was pushed wide to the left of the upright and the score remained knotted at 7-7.

Kutztown had the final chance to score in the first half, but a 39-yard field goal attempt by freshman Jack Ruggieri on the final play also sailed wide to the left to leave the score tied at 7-7 entering the intermission.

The hosts outgained SRU by a 182-166 margin in the opening two periods, primarily on 131 passing yards. The Rock had a balanced attack with 87 rushing yards and 79 passing yards, led by 72 yards on 16 carries by Satterfield.

Endres, after completing four of six passes for 48 yards on the scoring drive to open the game, ended the half with seven completions on 16 attempts for 79 yards with one interception. Sanders had four catches for 39 yards in the first two quarters.

The INT thrown by Endres proved harmless because Rock senior free safety Brandon Watters picked off Vogel on the very next play.

Kutztown appeared to be in position to take its first lead of the game on the opening drive of the second half, but a potential scoring drive was snuffed out by a fumble recovery by Rock senior defensive end Josh Smith at the SRU 28.

Six plays later, Endres hit Goda for a 28-yard TD to put The Rock on top by a 14-7 score with 8:02 left in the third period. The TD came two plays after Endres and Schademan hooked up for a 35-yard completion.

Kutztown came right back and marched to the SRU 15 on its ensuing possession, but again The Rock defense forced a turnover as senior linebacker Jake Wickline picked off a pass at the SRU 15.

Two plays later, though, The Rock gave the ball back to Kutztown as Endres was intercepted for the second time at the SRU 18.

That miscue proved fatal as Vogel threw a 16-yard TD pass to Josh Mastromatto on a fourth-and-5 play to tie the score at 14-14 with six seconds left to play in the third quarter.

SRU responded with a potential scoring drive on the ensuing possession but again had to settle for a field-goal attempt. Again, Brackman was unsuccessful, this time missing wide right from 34 yards out with 10:02 left to play in the game.

Three possessions later, Kutztown took its first lead of the game, 21-14, on the strength of a six-play, 67-yard scoring drive that culminated with what proved to be the game-winning play, a 14-yard TD pass from Vogel to Frazier with 2:59 left to play.
