LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University senior wide receiver
Devin Goda was named Sunday as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division “Offensive Player of the Week.”
Goda, a 6-foot-3, 225-pounder from Monongahela and Elizabeth Forward High School, earned the honor by catching nine passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns last Saturday in the 22nd-ranked Rock's 48-27 win at division rival Lock Haven University.
His touchdowns covered 38, 21, 43 and 32 yards.
Goda's pass receiving yardage and TDs total at Lock Haven set new SRU school records as they bettered marks held by former Rock All-America performers Bob Schrantz and Greg Hopkins.
Schrantz set the single-game pass receiving mark with 202 yards on 15 catches in a 29-25 Rock win Nov. 11, 1978 at Lock Haven. Hopkins tied the pass receiving yardage mark with 202 yards on 16 catches in a 49-37 Rock loss Nov. 7, 1992 vs. Clarion.
Hopkins, who went on to have an outstanding career in the Arena Football League, established the SRU single-game receiving TDs record with three scores Nov. 5, 1994, at Lock Haven. He caught nine passes for 200 yards in that game.
Goda, who caught two TD passes last Saturday from both starting quarterback
Cody Endres and backup signal caller
Jared Buck, leads The Rock in pass receptions (54) and receiving yards (758) this fall. He ranks third in the PSAC in receptions per game (6.8) and is fifth in receiving yards per game (94.8).
The fourth-year Rock starter is tied with himself for fifth on SRU's single-season pass receptions chart as he has matched his 2010 season total in only eight games this fall.
Goda also ranks fifth in single-season pass receiving yardage. He is second behind only Hopkins (215) on SRU's career pass receptions chart with 152 and ranks fourth in career pass receiving yards with 1,959.
Goda was the fourth Rock football student athlete to receive a PSAC Player of the Week honor this fall. Redshirt sophomore cornerback
Brandon Burley earned the Sept. 25 defensive honor, Endres was named the c0-offensive award winner on Oct. 2 and senior linebacker
Jake Wickline received the defensive honor Oct. 9.
As a team, The Rock owns a 7-1 overall record for the first time since 2007 and the 10th time in school history. The Green and White are unbeaten in five PSAC-West games and hold a one-game lead over both California (6-2, 4-1) and Indiana (5-2, 4-1) with two division games remaining on each team's schedule.
The Rock hosts defending conference champion Mercyhurst College at 1 p.m. Saturday in the final home game of the 2011 season. SRU then closes out the regular-season schedule with road games at Gannon University (Nov. 5) and C.W. Post (Nov. 12).
The Rock needs to beat either Mercyhurst or Gannon to assure themselves of at least a share of the PSAC-West championship and a berth in the PSAC Championship Game Nov. 12 at the site of the PSAC-East champion.
If SRU earns a berth in the PSAC Championship Game, the conference schedule would be altered and the PSAC-West team originally scheduled to face the PSAC-East champion in a “crossover” game the final week of the season would instead travel to Long Island to play C.W. Post.
The Rock seeks its first PSAC-West title since it shared the top spot with three other teams in 2000. A berth in the PSAC title game would be SRU's first since 1974.
The PSAC title game was discontinued from 1988-2007.
