SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Davis & Elkins Wednesday in a rain-soaked non-conference match at Jim Egli Field.
With the loss, The Rock falls to 4-7-1 overall. The Senators improved to 7-4-1 overall.
Slippery Rock opened the game with the first three shots before Davis & Elkins rallied for eight unanswered shots in the first half.
The Rock came out firing in the second half, finishing with 14 shots in the period, but could not solve keeper Moises Oseguera.
Both teams managed 17 total shots in the game, while Davis & Elkins finished with a slim 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Slippery Rock owned a 4-1 advantage in corner kick attempts.
Branko Dugalic opened the game's scoring in the 38th minute with a breakaway goal. His initial shot was saved by Rock keeper
Clayton Master, but the rebound came right back to his foot for the easy goal.
The 1-0 margin stood until halftime with the visitors posting an 8-3 edge in shots during the period.
Slippery Rock had multiple opportunities in the second half, both off set pieces and on the break, but could not find the equalizer.
After a Rock corner late in the game, Davis & Elkins countered with an odd man breakaway and David Nuernberg added an insurance goal at the 81:16 mark. Humberto Betran was credited with an assist on the play.
Slippery Rock pushed the pace over the final 10 minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
The Rock will host Pitt-Johnstown Saturday in a 7 p.m. non-conference match at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. The inaugural SRU Soccer Ring of Honor class will be honored at halftime of the game.
