Rock netters ranked third in region, 44th in nation

SRU is ranked behind PSAC rivals California and Bloomsburg in the March 30 Intercollegiate Tennis Association polls

SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team was ranked third in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Atlantic Regional poll and 44th in the national poll, both of which were released March 30.

The Rock trailed only Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rivals California and Bloomsburg in the ranking of teams from the PSAC, West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Veteran head coach Matt Meredith's squad currently owns an 11-3 record. The losses came against Division II #43-ranked Bloomsburg (5-4 on Sept. 20), Division III #10-ranked Carnegie Mellon (9-0 on Feb. 13) and Division I Evansville (4-3 on March 10).

The Rock has recorded wins this season over five teams ranked among the regional top 10: #4 West Liberty State, W. Va.; #5 West Virginia Wesleyan; #6 Kutztown; #8 Mercyhurst and #10 (tie) Shaw,, N.C.

SRU dropped five spots to 44th in the ITA national rankings. California was ranked eighth, while Bloomsburg was 43rd.

SRU's No. 1 doubles team of senior Laura Handy and sophomore Dunja Drmac were ranked third in the region as a tandem, while Handy was ranked sixth as a singles player.

The Rock returns to action Tuesday, when it will host Division III Allegheny in a 4 p.m. match on the SRU outdoor courts.

The ITA Division II Atlantic Region team, singles, and doubles top 10 rankings were as follows:
