ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team put a scare into No. 5 Mercyhurst with a seven-goal second half rally before falling short, 21-12, Thursday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest at Tullio Field.
Mercyhurst (13-1, 7-1 PSAC) won the first six draw controls and converted on each possession to jump out to a 6-0 lead just eight minutes into the game. The Lakers pushed the lead out to 10-1 with 9:18 left in the first half before Slippery Rock (6-8, 2-6 PSAC) rallied for four goals to trail 12-5 at halftime.
The Rock added a four-goal run in the second half to pull to within five at 15-10 with just over 14 minutes to play, but the Lakers responded with six goals down the stretch to seal the 21-12 win and lock up the second seed in the PSAC-West heading into the playoffs.
Amy Halls led The Rock effort with five goals and one assist to go along with six draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Emma VanDenburg scored two goals and handed out three assists, while
Dakota McCoy and
Ariel Knox each scored two goals and had one assist.
Casey Quinn scored one goal to cap the scoring for SRU, while also finishing with a team-high three caused turnovers.
Ashley Winkelspecht took the loss in goal after allowing 18 goals and recording 11 saves.
Danielle Gonzales saw action for just over three minutes, allowing three goals.
Mercyhurst was led by a 12 point effort from Ally Keirn with six goals and six assists. Kimberly Masterton added four goals and one assist and Kayla Minner scored a hat trick with three goals and one assist.
Maeve McGoff earned the win, allowing five goals and recording three saves in the first half. Jenny Perkins allowed seven goals and made three saves in the second half.
For the game, Mercyhurst finished with advantages of 45-19 in total shots, 29-19 in ground balls and 20-16 in draw controls while clearing successfully on 18-of-20 attempts and holding Slippery Rock to 14-of-18 on clear attempts.
The Rock returns home Saturday to host Seton Hill in a non-conference match. First draw is set for 5 p.m. at Thompson Stadium.
