Rock holds off Edinboro, 14-12

The Rock held off a late five-goal rally from Edinboro to secure a 14-12 conference win Monday night at Thompson Stadium

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team held off a late rally by Edinboro to emerge with a 14-12 win in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest Monday night at Thompson Stadium.

Monday's win marked the sixth win of the season for Slippery Rock, which is the highest win total for the program since it returned to the varsity level in 2007. The six wins are the most of any SRU team since the 1989 team finished with an 8-2 record.

Slippery Rock (6-7, 2-5 PSAC) clung to a one-goal lead, 7-6, at halftime after Alexis Slutsky scored with seven seconds left in the first half to break a 6-6 tie.

The Rock opened the second half with three goals to take a 10-6 lead before Edinboro (2-11, 0-7 PSAC) scored its first goal of the half with 20:32 to play.

SRU responded with a four-goal run to push its lead out to seven at 14-7 with 15 minutes to play, but a resilient Fighting Scot team roared back into the game with five unanswered goals to pull within two at 14-12 with just under two minutes to go.

Slippery Rock gained possession following the ensuing draw control and was able to keep Edinboro out of its offensive end to secure the win.

Emma VanDenburg led Slippery Rock with five points on three goals and two assists, while also picking up five ground balls and causing two turnovers. Ariel Knox finished with a game-high four goals, while Amy Halls added two goals and one assist to finish with three points. Halls also finished with a team-high six ground balls, a career-high eight draw controls and three caused turnovers. Katie Roof finished with three points on one goal and two assists.

Alexis Slutsky scored one goal and handed out one assist and Dakota McCoy added one goal to cap the scoring for SRU.

Ashley Winkelspecht picked up the win in goal after allowing 12 goals and recording four saves.

Edinboro was led by a six-point effort from Kristin Sann, who scored four goals and added two assists. Shannon Rohrich finished with three goals and one assist and Kaitlin Magee added one goal and three assists.

Julie McAvoy took the loss in goal, allowing 14 goals and recording nine saves.

For the game, Slippery Rock finished with advantages of 30-21 in total shots, 22-17 in ground balls and 20-8 in draw controls. The Rock cleared successfully on 7-of-12 attempts, while Edinboro cleared the zone 13-of-24 times successfully.

Monday's game capped a three-game homestand for SRU, which will travel to Mercyhurst Thursday for a PSAC-West match. First draw is set for 4 p.m. The Rock returns home Saturday to face Seton Hill at 5 p.m.
