Rock falls 19-9 at East Stroudsburg

The Rock lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead before East Stroudsburg rallied for a 19-9 non-conference win Saturday

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.
– The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team jumped out in front early but East Stroudsburg used scoring runs of six and five goals to take control of the game en route to a 19-9 victory in a non-conference match Saturday.

The Rock (4-3) scored the first two goals of the game, with Casey Quinn finding the back of the net just 11 seconds in and Samantha Eddy scoring one minute later to put SRU up 2-0.

East Stroudsburg (6-1) scored the next two goals in the fifth and sixth minutes before Quinn and Eddy notched their second goals of the game to regain a two goal lead, 4-2 with 18:50 to play in the half.

Again, the Warriors responded with two more goals to tie the game with 12:29 to play, but Quinn answered right back with her third goal of the game to put SRU up 5-4 with 10:22 to play in the half.

East Stroudsburg then took control, scoring three times to end the half with a two goal lead and opening the second half with three more goals to cap a 6-0 run.

The Rock tallied its first goal of the second half in the 10th minute when Emma VanDenburg converted on a free position attempt, but the Warriors reeled of the next five goals to put the game out of reach.

Quinn finished the game with three goals, three ground balls and three draw controls to lead SRU. Eddy and Dakota McCoy each scored two goals, while McCoy added The Rock's lone assist of the game.

VanDenburg and Amy Halls each scored one goal to cap the scoring for SRU and Katie Roof led the team with four ground balls.

Ashley Winkelspecht took the loss in goal, allowing 19 goals and recording 10 saves.

East Stroudsburg was led by Molly O'Hara with seven points on four goals and three assists. Four players scored two goals and three others tallied one goal for the Warriors.

Amanda Simms earned the win in goal, allowing nine goals and recording seven saves.

For the game, East Stroudsburg finished with advantages of 33-22 in total shots, 16-14 in draw controls and 42-23 in ground balls. The Rock was credited with 31 turnovers to the Warriors' 19.

Slippery Rock will host No. 2 Lock Haven Tuesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest. First draw is set for 4 p.m. at Thompson Stadium.


Notes: Both teams took part in the Lax-4-Life initiative Saturday by wearing t-shirts during pregame warm-ups ... Lax-4-Life is a Division II initiative for women's lacrosse programs this year with the intent of raising awareness about suicide ... SRU will host its Lax-4-Life event April 17 against Seton Hill.
