#17 Rock downs West Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1

The No. 17-ranked Rock men's soccer team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1, in non-conference action Tuesday at Egli Field. Slippery Rock saw multi-point performances from Jeremy Deighton, Alex Swartz and Toby Bowser in the winning effort.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The No. 17-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1, Tuesday in a non-conference game at Egli Field.

The Rock (4-1) opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Alex Swartz scored from 20 yards out into the top right corner of the net off a touch pass assist from Jeremy Deighton.

West Virginia Wesleyan (1-3) tallied the second goal of the game, tying the score at 1-1 when Brett Fackenthal beat The Rock defense down the right side and scored far post off a long assist from Alister Fleming in the 19th minute.

Swartz put The Rock back on top in the 40th minute, finishing off a double assist from Toby Bowser and Deighton. Bowser's throw-in was headed by Deighton directly to the foot of Schwartz, who found the inside of the far post to put Slippery Rock up 2-1 going into the half.

The Bobcats controlled the game for the opening of the second half before Deighton was able to tally an insurance goal in the 73rd minute. Deighton's initial header was saved by West Virginia Wesleyan's keeper, but The Rock's scoring leader put the rebound home to cap the scoring in the game.

Deighton finished with a season-high four points with one goal and two assists. Shwartz finished with a career-high two goal effort and Bowser, who tied the SRU record for single season assists in 2008, finished with two assists.

Greg Blum played the first half in goal for The Rock, earning the win after recording one save. Freshman Timothy White saw his first collegiate action, playing the entire second half and not allowing a goal. He finished with two saves.

Andrew Baldasare took the loss in goal for the Bobcats, allowing three goals and recording four saves.

The Rock finished the game with advantages of 17-11 in total shots, 7-3 in shots on goal and 8-3 in corner kicks.

Slippery Rock will travel to Ohio Valley this Saturday, Sept. 12, for a 1 p.m. non-conference match.
