LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team defeated Lock Haven, 1-0, Wednesday evening in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division opener for each team.
The lone goal of the game came when
Jeremy Deighton finessed his way around a defender to finish off a double assist from Thomas Pool and
Shaun Reid, beating Lock Haven's diving keeper to the far post in the 30th minute.
In a game that featured excellent goalkeeping and key saves on each side, Slippery Rock's
Greg Blum came away with the win, recording five saves in the complete 90 minute effort and picking up his second shutout of the season.
Chris Custer took the loss for Lock Haven after allowing one goal and recording three saves.
The Bald Eagles finished the game with advantages of 9-6 in total shots, 5-3 in shots on goal and 5-4 in corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 2-1 overall and opens PSAC-West play at 1-0. Lock Haven drops to 0-1-1 overall and opens conference play at 0-1.
The Rock will host No.16 California (Pa.) in a PSAC-West game Saturday, Sept. 5, at Egli Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and will be the middle game of a home triple-header for SRU athletics Saturday, with the women's soccer team facing California (Pa.) at 1 p.m. and the football team hosting Millersville at Thompson Stadium at 6 p.m.
