ERIE, Pa. –
Toby Bowser scored the game-winning goal in the seventh minute of overtime as the 15th-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team came away with a hard fought 4-3 win over Gannon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division game Saturday.
The Rock held a 2-0 lead after the first half, but Gannon stormed back into the game with three goals in a six minute stretch midway through the second half to take a 3-2 lead.
Benjamin Lloyd scored the equalizer for The Rock in the 88th minute, sending the game to overtime and setting up the wild finish, where Bowser found the ball off a Gannon turnover in the box and sent the game-winner into the net over the keeper's head.
The win is the sixth straight for Slippery Rock, which improves to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC-West. Gannon drops to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Lloyd put The Rock on the board first, scoring in the 18th minute after after fielding a pass from
Shaun Reid and beating Gannon's goalkeeper off a breakaway. Lloyd, a freshman, finished Saturday's game with a career high five points and now has a point streak of three games.
Jeremy Deighton scored the second goal of the game after finding the net through traffic off an assist from Lloyd in the 42nd minute, giving The Rock a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Gannon stormed back into the game in the second half, scoring first when Shane Hallett found the net on a header in the 66th minute. Less than three minutes later, Gannon got the equalizer from Dan Howell after he beat Rock keeper
Greg Blum to the left side in the 69th minute. With all the momentum swinging his team's way, Howell added the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute to cap a six minute stretch with Gannon leading 3-2.
The Rock battled back, with Lloyd's marker in the 88th minute setting up the finish.
Blum earned the win in goal after allowing three goals and recording a season-high seven saves. Steven Boehmer took the loss, allowing four goals and recording four saves.
Gannon's three goals Saturday were more than Slippery Rock had allowed in its previous seven games total (2). The Golden Knights finished the game with advantages of 21-15 in total shots, 10-8 in shots on goal and 4-0 in corner kicks, marking the second straight game that The Rock was outshot and managed to come away with a win.
The Rock will host Mercyhurst under the lights at Thompson Stadium this Tuesday, Sept. 22. Game time is set for 6 p.m. Live statistics and a live audio broadcast will be available.
