SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The No. 15-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team won its fifth straight game Wednesday, defeating the University of Charleston (W. Va.), 1-0, in non-conference action at Egli Field.
Alex Swartz scored his third goal of the season and the lone goal of the game in the 30th minute, chipping in a rebound after
Benjamin Lloyd hit the post on a free kick. Lloyd was credited with the assist on the play.
Charleston came out firing in the second half and controlled possession for much of the period, but could not find the back of the net. The Golden Eagles best chance came with 1:40 to play, but they were called for offsides, negating what could have been the tying marker.
Greg Blum played the entire game in goal for The Rock, earning his sixth win and fourth shutout of the season after registering six saves.
Sean Teepen was credited with the loss after allowing one goal and recording three saves.
Charleston finished the game with advantages of 13-7 in total shots, 6-4 in shots on goal and 3-1 in corner kicks.
Wednesday's win marked the second time this season that The Rock was outshot, yet still managed to post a shutout victory.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 6-1 overall. Charleston drops to 5-2.
The Rock will resume Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action Saturday when it travels to Gannon for a 3 p.m. contest.
