#18 Rock falls to #24 Ashland, 1-0

The Rock dropped a closely contested match to No.24 Ashland, 1-0, Sunday to close action at the Shippensburg Tournament with a 1-1 overall record

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.
– The No.18-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision against No.24 Ashland Sunday in the final game of the Shippensburg Tournament.

Ashland (2-0) scored in the 73rd minute when Tom Rankin ricocheted a shot off a Slippery Rock (1-1) defender and into the net for the game's lone goal.

Ashland controlled the first half and held advantages of 8-1 in total shots and 10-1 in corner kicks at the intermission. The Rock displayed a more balanced attack in the second half, but Ashland still held advantages in shots and corner kicks, finishing the game with 16 total shots to The Rock's five. Ashland also held a 7-2 edge in shots on goal and a 16-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Greg Blum was credited with the loss in goal after allowing one goal and registering six saves in a complete game effort. Blaize Lishewski earned the win after recording two saves for Ashland.

The Rock's shots on goal came from Jeremy Deighton and Anthony Paganie, while Rankin led Ashland with four shots on goal, including the game winner that was assisted by James Livingston.

Slippery Rock closed the opening tournament with a split after defeating Shippensburg 2-0 Thursday night in the season opener. The Rock will open the 2009 conference scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Lock Haven. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will follow the women's game, slated to start at 2 p.m.
