SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No.18-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team opened its 2009 season with a 2-0-shutout win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover foe Shippensburg Thursday night at David See Field.
The Rock, which was originally slated to open the season Friday night against Salem International, was informed late Wednesday night of a schedule change in the Shippensburg tournament when Salem International dropped out.
“It wasn't ideal for preparation,” said Rock head coach Matt Thompson. “We thought we were going to have an extra day to prepare and to travel, but we knew we would be alright regardless.”
The match was close throughout the first half, reaching the 45-minute mark scoreless with Slippery Rock holding a 6-5 advantage in shots.
The Rock opened the scoring in the 50th minute when
Jeremy Deighton headed home a crossing pass from
Josh Gauger into the top right corner of the net.
Less than nine minutes later,
Toby Bowser added an insurance goal off an assist from
Anthony Paganie to put Slippery Rock up 2-0.
Greg Blum played the full 90 minutes in goal and was credited with the win and the shutout after recording three saves.
Clay Sale was credited with the loss for Shippensburg after playing the final 45 minutes and allowing both goals. Andrew Foran played the first half and allowed no goals.
The Rock held advantages of 12-10 in total shots, 7-3 in shots on goal and 6-5 in corner kicks while also being called for just three fouls to the Raiders 13.
Thursday's win marked the first time since the 2006 season that Slippery Rock opened its season with a win, dating back to a 2-0 win over Kutztown at Egli Field on Aug. 24, 2006.
Slippery Rock will close the Shippensburg tournament Sunday with a 2 p.m. match against Ashland, as originally scheduled.
