ERIE, Pa. – The No.6 ranked Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team defeated Slippery Rock 19-3 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest Wednesday at Mercyhurst.
Mercyhurst, ranked sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, scored the first 15 goals of the game and carried a 15-1 advantage into the halftime intermission.
The Rock's first goal came with one second remaining in the opening period when
Amy Halls scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season on a free position attempt.
Katie Roof opened the scoring in the second half with a goal at the 25:28 mark before Mercyhurst scored four unanswered goals to push the lead to 19-2.
Sam Huebner netted The Rock's final goal with 26 seconds left to play.
Ashley Winkelspecht was credited with the loss after allowing 16 goals and recording 11 saves in 44:34 in net.
Sara Williams allowed three goals in 15:26 between the pipes.
Maeve McGoff earned the win for The Lakers after allowing one goal and recording five saves. Breanna Haggerty led the team with a game-high five goals and three assists for eight points.
Mercyhurst finished the game with a 37-15 advantage in total shots and won 16 of 23 draws.
With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC-West. Mercyhurst improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Rock will travel to Kutztown Saturday, March 21, for a PSAC crossover contest. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
