SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.
– The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team registered its first NCAA victory since 1991 when it defeated Edinboro Thursday night, 17-6, in a game played in below freezing temperatures at N. Kerr Thompson Field.

The freshmen duo of Amy Halls and Katie Roof combined for 10 goals to lead The Rock past Edinboro.

The win is historic in that it marks the first NCAA victory since the program returned to varsity competition in 2007 and the first NCAA victory in 17 years.

Slippery Rock dropped lacrosse from the varsity ranks to a club sport in 1991 after a 3-7 season and brought it back to NCAA Division II competition in 2007. Prior to Thursday night, the team had posted an 0-34 overall record since its return.

Second year head coach Emily Boosahda entered Thursday's game with just seven players with collegiate experience on a roster that boasts 12 freshmen.

It was the freshmen that led the way for The Rock, as both Halls and Roof netted five goals in the game. Halls was also credited with two assists to finish with a game-high seven points, while Roof was credited with one assist to finish with six points.

Sophomore Sam Huebner, also playing her first season of collegiate lacrosse, scored three goals. Freshman Emma VanDenburg scored two goals, with freshman Alexis Slutsky adding one goal and sophomore Alison Rusnak also scoring one goal.

Junior goalie Ashley Winkelspecht was credited with the win after allowing six goals and recording 12 saves in just over 49 minutes in net. Sara Williams played the final 10:52 of the game, allowing no goals and picking up one save.

The Rock jumped out of the gate, scoring five unanswered goals in the first 7:01 and taking a 10-3 advantage into the halftime intermission. Huebner's goal with 7:57 left in the second half put Slippery Rock up 16-6 and put the game into a continuous-clock situation.

Edinboro, was led by two goals from both Maureen McAvoy and Julie McAvoy. Teresa Fiori was credited with the loss in goal after allowing five goals and recording two saves before being replaced by Erin Balcerzak 7:01 into the first half.

With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 1-2 overall while Edinboro evens out at 2-2. The Fighting Scots will not be counted toward the PSAC-West standings this year, as it is their first year of competition.

The Rock will host No.5 Lock Haven Saturday at Thompson Stadium. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans can listen live via a free web stream over the internet through www.rockathletics.com.
