WASHINGTON, Pa. – The 10th-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team had a nine-game winning streak snapped Tuesday with a 3-1 loss at California (Pa.) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest.
The loss is the first for The Rock since a 1-0 setback against Ashland on Aug. 30 and drops the team's record to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the PSAC-West. The win was the sixth-straight for the Vulcans, who improve to 9-3 overall and pick up just their second conference win of the season, moving to 2-3 in divisional play.
California (Pa.) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals by Mike Luecke and Felipe Souza in the 22nd and 28th minutes before The Rock could get on the board.
Jeremy Deighton brought the lead down to one when he scored his PSAC-leading 10th goal of the season in the 33rd minute off an assist from
Toby Bowser.
Slippery Rock held a 6-5 advantage in total shots at halftime and each team had registered four shots on goal.
The Vulcans added an insurance goal in the 66th minute when Luecke scored his second of the game.
California (Pa.) outshot Slippery Rock 9-4 in the second half to finish the game with advantages of 14-10 in total shots and 7-4 in shots on goal. Each team finished with four corner kicks.
Greg Blum was credited with the loss in goal after allowing three goals and recording four saves. Wednesday's game marked just the second time Blum had allowed more than one goal in a single game this season. Derek Yobbi earned the win, allowing one goal and recording three saves.
Slippery Rock is back in action Saturday when it hosts West Chester in a PSAC crossover matchup at Egli Field. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
Saturday's game will be a part of the PSAC's “Red Card Cancer” initiative. Both teams will wear specially designed t-shirts during warm-ups and donations will be accepted at the gate. A 50/50 raffle will also be held during the event with all proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society.
