Rock falls by 3-1 score in PSAC semifinals

California (Pa.) scored two second-half goals to win Wednesday's game

Boxscore

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Hosting California scored two second-half goals Wednesday afternoon to hand The Rock a 3-1 defeat in semifinal action of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs at Roadman Park.

With the win, the Vulcans improved to 12-7-2 overall. The Rock suffered their second straight loss -- both at the hands of California -- after an eight-game win streak and saw its record fall to 13-6-1.

The Rock now awaits word next Monday on its bid for a berth in the NCAA Division II national playoffs. SRU was ranked second in the Atlantic Regional poll released Tuesday; the top four teams in the final regular-season poll next Monday will earn NCAA tournament berths.

California scored the first goal of the game in the 10th minute of action, only to see The Rock tie the count at 1-1 on a goal by junior forward Jeremy Deighton (pictured above).

The goal was Deighton's 15th of the season.

The two teams entered halftime tied at 1-1 before the Vulcans seized control of the game in the opening minutes of the second period. The hosts scored the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute and added an insurance tally in the 78th minute.

California held a 13-8 advantage in shots and had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalie Greg Blum recorded six saves for The Rock.
