LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Rock junior forward
Jeremy Deighton and SRU head coach
Matt Thompson received two of the top three Western Division awards handed out Wednesday by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Deighton (pictured in left photo) was named as the division's Athlete of the Year, while Thompson (pictured in right photo) received the Coach of the Year award in voting by the division's head coaches.
Deighton was one of four Rock student-athletes who earned first-team All-PSAC-West status for their roles in leading SRU to a second-place finish in the regular-season division competition.
Also named to the top list were sophomore midfielder
Toby Bowser, freshman defender
Pat Conley and sophomore goalie
Greg Blum.
Sophomore midfielder
Mitchell Walters was the lone Rock player to earn second-team status.
Deighton, a native of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and graduate of Cleveland St. Ignatius High School, leads The Rock and ranks third in the PSAC in goals scored with 15. He also has two assists to his credit, which combined with his goals total gives him the third best scoring average in the conference. An ESPN The Magazine second-team Academic All-District selection, he has scored six game-winning goals this fall.
Thompson guided The Rock to their third PSAC playoff berth in his seven-year head coaching career and currently owns a 65-63-12 career record. This year's win total marked the fourth time in the last five seasons the Green and White won 10 or more games; SRU has only had 14 double-digit win totals since 1934.
The Coach of the Year honor is the second received by Thompson in the last four seasons; he was also honored by his peers after leading The Rock to the conference championship in 2005.
Bowser, a native of Beaver and graduate of Beaver High School, is The Rock's second leading scorer this fall with two goals and a conference-best 14 assists. He ranks second on SRU's single-season assists chart, one shy of the school record.
Conley, while teaming with Blum to provide the backbone for a Rock defense that has recorded seven shutouts and held opponents to 1.90 goals per game, has also scored four goals and assisted on a fifth. Conley hails from Hurricane, W. Va., and is a graduate of St. Joseph Central Catholic High School.
Blum, a native of Ambridge and graduate of Ambridge High School, has compiled a 1.20 goals against average and .809 save percentage this fall and has chalked up six solo shutouts.
Walter, a native of Hummelstown and graduate of Lower Dauphin High School, was a Rocl-solid contributor to the overall effort and recorded one assist this fall.
The Rock opens NCAA Division II playoff competition Friday with a 4 p.m. first-round game vs. East Stroudsburg at Millersville University. A win Friday would move the Green and White into Sunday's 2 p.m. second-round game against either Millersville or California (Pa.).
