SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Rock, by virtue of its 3-1 win at Lock Haven and Gannon's 3-0 win over Mercyhurst in action Wednesday, has been assured of a berth in this year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.
The Rock, winners of eight straight games and owners of a 13-4-1 overall record, currently sit atop the division standings. The Green and White can finish no lower than second place in the five-team division.
If The Rock can maintain that top spot, SRU would host a semifinal playoff game Tuesday at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium against a team yet to be determined.
To stay atop the division standings, The Rock must beat or tie California (Pa.) in the regular-season finale, which will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday on James W. Egli Soccer Field.
A California win would catapult the Vulcans to the top of the division standings and earn them the host role for Tuesday's semifinal game against The Rock.
A tie between The Rock and California would leave the Vulcans, Lock Haven and Mercyhurst all tied for second place and necessitate the implementation of the tiebreaker criteria to determine which team would visit The Rock for the semifinal game.
This year's playoff berth is the first earned by The Rock since 2006, when the Green and White earned extended life for the second successive season.
