SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Junior forward
Jeremy Deighton (pictured above) knocked home a loose ball in front of the net with just less than a minute left to play Saturday afternoon to lift The Rock past visiting Bloomsburg, 2-1, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action on James W. Egli Soccer Field.
The goal was Deighton's team-best seventh of the season. Redshirt freshman forward
Anthony Paganie was credited with his fourth assist of the season on the game-winning goal.
Sophomore defender
Raj Phanda scored his first goal of the season in the 33rd minute of action off an assist from freshman midfielder
Ross Matthews to give The Rock a 1-0 lead.
Bloomsburg tied the score at 1-1 in the final minutes of the first half with a penalty-kick tally resulting from a Rock foul inside the box.
The Rock outshot Bloomsburg by a 25-9 margin as SRU sophomore goalie Greb Blum was called upon to make five saves. Bloomsburg netminder David Leiendecker recorded 12 saves.
Saturday's win was the third straight for SRU, which will now take an 8-4-1 overall record into Wednesday's 4 p.m. non-conference duel on Egli Field with Alderson-Broaddus (W. Va.).
Wednesday's game will end a four-game home stand for The Rock and will be the fourth in a string of five non-conference games.
