No. 9 Rock rolls to 5-1 win at Maryville

The ninth-ranked Slippery Rock field hockey team captured a 5-1 road victory Saturday at Maryville. The win improves SRU’s record to 6-0, matching the best start to a season in program history. Four SRU athletes had goals, led by Hilary Hoffman’s two scores.

ST. LOUIS – The ninth-ranked Slippery Rock University field hockey team maintained its perfect record in 2026 with a 5-1 victory Saturday at Maryville University.

The Rock's latest win improves their record to a spotless 6-0 on the year. SRU's current run to start the season is virtually unprecedented inside the program.

In addition to being the first Rock field hockey team to start a season 6-0 since 1976, the six consecutive wins also ties the '76 squad for the longest overall winning streak in program history. With nearly two-thirds of the season still to be played, this year's team has already recorded the most wins at The Rock since 2022.

A victory Sunday over Maryville (0-5) would mark the best start to a season in program history and give the 2026 team sole possession of the longest winning streak by a Rock team: the 1976 team tied Penn State (1-1) in its seventh game of the year.

On the national stage, Slippery Rock is one of only three undefeated teams remaining in Division II along with Kutztown (9-0) and Bloomsburg (7-0).

Saturday's victory was a complete team-effort. Seven different athletes registered at least one point, three goalkeepers combined to nearly tally the shutout and The Rock's back line came away with a defensive save.

Slippery Rock's offense, which matched a single-game program record in total shots (38), was led by Hilary Hoffman. The senior produced two goals and eight attempts on target for her third career multi-goal game.

Lucy Hutchinson, who entered the weekend ranked second in the nation in both points per game and goals per game, continued her offensive onslaught with another three-point outing courtesy of one goal and one assist.

Hutchinson, who placed six of her eight shots on goal versus Maryville, is now up to 24 points in 2026 with 10 goals and four assists. SRU has not had an athlete amass 24 points in a season since Kayla Ulrich in 2017. Hutchinson is already tied with Ulrich and Cathy Copeman (1975) for the seventh-most points in program single-season history.

Grace Williams and Coral Piramo each added goals as well as combining for six shots on goal. The goals were Piramo's fifth of the year and Williams' fourth on the campaign.

Rounding out Slippery Rock's offensive leaders with one assist each were Josie Shultz, Haylie Sucharski and Riley Cloude.

Starting goalkeeper Sam Black anchored The Rock's defense with two saves over 36 minutes of playing time before backups Leah Riegling (8:47) and Rylee Catterton (15:00) finished out the victory.

Ava Masorti chipped in her first defensive save of the season as well on a day in which SRU gave up just four shots on goal.

Slippery Rock scored five consecutive goals to open Saturday's victory. Piramo put SRU on the scoreboard first with a goal 10 minutes into regulation followed by two second-quarter goals from Hoffman that sent The Rock into halftime leading 3-0. SRU is outscoring its opponents 18-2 in the first half of games this season.

The second half saw Hutchinson (32:18) and Williams (33:20) convert scoring opportunities a mere 62 seconds apart in the third quarter to push Slippery Rock's lead to five goals. Hutchinson has scored a goal in every game this season, becoming the first documented Rock athlete with a goal in six consecutive games.

While Maryville did break up the shutout bid on a Consuelo Torres Moore goal in the 37th minute, SRU did not allow a shot the rest of the game en route to the four-goal decision.

Slippery Rock ended the day holding advantages over the Saints in total shots (38-8), shots on goal (23-4) and penalty corners (19-4).

SRU and Maryville finish off its weekend series 11 a.m. (CDT) Sunday.
