No. 9 Rock beats Maryville for best start in program history

Behind two goals from Delaney Evans, the No. 9 Slippery Rock field hockey team earned a 3-0 shutout victory Sunday over Maryville for a program record seventh consecutive win.

ST. LOUIS - The ninth-ranked Slippery Rock University field hockey team continued its undefeated march through its non-conference competition with a 3-0 shutout victory Sunday at Maryville University.

Sunday's win improves The Rock's record to a 7-0 in 2026, while the host Saints fall to 0-6. In addition to being a school record winning streak, SRU's unblemished record also marks the best start to a season in program history.

As was the case in its victory over Maryville on Saturday, The Rock's offense once again peppered the Saints' cage with 33 attempts, 23 of which were on goal. Defensively, Slippery Rock netted its second shutout of the season by allowing just three Maryville shots, including two that were stopped by goalkeeper Sam Black.

The Rock's seven wins in 2026 already match the highest single-season win total inside the program since the 2017 team won 10 games.

Through seven games, Slippery Rock is averaging 4.14 goals per game while giving up just 0.86 goals a contest. In terms of totals, 2026 is the first season SRU has allowed six or fewer goals in its first seven games since 1992. Slippery Rock has never scored 29 goals in its first seven games until this year.

Freshman Delaney Evans came off the bench to score two goals in Sunday's win. The multi-score afternoon gives SRU's talented rookie three goals on the year.

Grace Williams scored The Rock's third goal, her fifth of the season, all the while assisting on one of Evans' goals. Coral Piramo picked up an assist as well, her third of the season. Piramo has provided SRU with at least one point in all seven games in 2026.

Five Rock athletes placed multiple shots on goal Sunday. Lucy Hutchinson led the way with six followed by Williams (4), Piramo (4), Evans (2) and Hilary Hoffman (3). Roz Mikulak, Riley Cloude, Brooke Page and Keila Schutte-Hanekom also chipped in one shot on goal apiece.

In navigating The Rock's defense to a shutout, Black lowered her season goals against average to 0.70 and increased her save percentage to .778.

Collectively, Slippery Rock held advantages over Maryville in total shots (33-3), shots on goal (23-2) and penalty corners (9-2).

Following a scoreless opening quarter, The Rock registered the first goal of the contest courtesy of a perfectly struck attempt by Evans, who was set up to score by Piramo.

While Slippery Rock dominated possession and posted 22 total shots without allowing a single MU attempt, Evans' first goal proved to be the lone difference in the first two quarters as Saints goalie Bri Raak stopped 12 SRU shots on goal, including a stop on a penalty stroke attempt by Piramo, to keep The Rock's lead at 1-0 through 30 minutes.

Slippery Rock needed just six minutes into the third quarter to tally its second score of the afternoon when Evans fired off another shot from top left side of the circle that sailed through traffic, beating Raak and giving SRU a 2-0 lead.

SRU added an insurance goal from Williams in the 43rd minute. Williams received a pass from Hutchinson at midfield and proceeded to navigate her way through the Maryville defense for the goal at 42:26. The tally was the final of the weekend for Slippery Rock in the 3-0 victory.

Raak made 17 saves for Marayville and Ava Eiler totaled two defensive saves to pace the Saints.

Slippery Rock continues its five-game road trip when it opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition 12 p.m. Oct. 3 at No. 10 Millersville University.
