SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock women's soccer team scored six goals for the fourth time this season in a 6-2 victory over California (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play under the lights Wednesday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Slippery Rock improved to 6-2-1 overall with a 5-1-1 mark inside the PSAC West with the win, while California's overall record dropped to 1-6-1 overall and 1-6-0 in the PSAC West.
SRU regained sole possession of first place in the PSAC West with 16 points after the win. Slippery Rock was tied with Gannon University entering the night on 13 points, but the Golden Knights had played one more divisional game. SRU and GU are now even on games played, as Gannon traveled to Roberts Wesleyan University for non-conference action, resulting in a 0-0 draw.
The Rock benefited from five different goal scorers and six different players earn points in the victory.
Peyton Los ended the night with a brace, giving her four goals on the season, tying her for SRU's goal lead with
Sophia Palermo and
Lilia Battalini, who scored one goal and dished out two assists against Cal.
Summer Hill,
Jilly Deivert and
Lindsey Price all scored one goal as well, with
Gianna Revetta earning one assist.
Slippery Rock has scored 27 goals in six home games to start the season, averaging 3.22 goals/game on its home field.
Los led all players with five shots and landed all five on goal. Palermo, Price, Hill, Battalini and
Bailey McGee all took two shots for The Rock, while Deivert,
Abby Paterline,
Leah Walter and
Molly Interthal round out SRU's shot takers with one each.
Leah Allman made her 64
th career start in goal, tying her with Emma Yoder (2018-2022) for the most goalie starts in program history. Allman made one save and surrendered one goal in 64 minutes of action.
Rosie Willmott Joyce substituted for Allman in the 65
th minute and made three saves while also surrendering one goal. Â
Slippery Rock struck for the first two goals, just four minutes apart in the 30
th and 34
th minutes. Los grabbed the first goal off an assist by Battalini, who also grabbed the second goal. Both goals were scored from outside of the box with their left foot.
California cut SRU's lead to, 2-1, in the 35
th minute after Macrina Robb's second goal of the season off an assist from Sophia Orphall.
The goals came in bunches in the first half as Slippery Rock struck two more times before halftime as Los once again found the back of the net, followed by a strike from Hill off a helper from Battalini, giving SRU a 4-1 lead entering the game break.
The Vulcans scored first in the second half with Pia Stock's first goal of the season, coming from outside of the box.
The Rock capped off their victory with two more goals in the game's final 10 minutes, coming from Price with an assist from Revetta, as well as Deivert, clinching a 6-2 victory for Slippery Rock.
Slippery Rock ended the game with advantages in shots (19-10) as well as shots on goal (13-7).
The Rock continues their stretch of home games with the final game of the first cycle of PSAC West play in a matchup against Indiana University (Pa.) 1 p.m. at James Egli Field.
