SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team scored three goals in each half to secure a 6-2 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory over Clarion Wednesday at James Egli Field.
Slippery Rock improved to 5-1-1 on the season that includes a 4-0-1 record inside the PSAC West with the win, while Clarion fell to 3-2-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the division with the loss.
With the result, SRU is now 10-0-2 in its last 12 games at James Egli Field with a +30 goal differential (40-10).
Sophia Palermo and
Eden Williams each scored a brace in the game, while
Lilia Battalini scored her third goal of the season and
Gianna Revetta found the back of the net for her first career goal.
Bailey McGee,
Lindsey Price and
Summer Hill each grabbed one assist, while
Abby Paterline led The Rock with two helpers.
Palermo led all players with nine shots and four on goal. Battalini (5), Paterline (3), McGee (2), Williams (2) and
Jilly Deivert (3) each took multiple shots for SRU.
Leah Allman earned the win in goal after making one save over the 90 minutes. Allman moved into second place in goalie games started at The Rock with her 62
nd start, just one behind Emma Yoder for the top spot. Â
Clarion opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a goal off a set piece from Kelly O'Donnell as Sydney Taracatac earned the assist.
SRU evened the score, 1-1, in the 19
th minute after Williams took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Golden Eagles and slid the ball into the open goal.
Slippery Rock then took its first lead of the game in the 25
th minutes as Palermo received a pass from Paterline outside of the box and struck a shot that found the top right corner, giving The Rock a 2-1 advantage.
Palermo doubled SRU's lead just three minutes later from inside the box off an assist from McGee, making Slippery Rock's lead, 3-1.
Clarion cut Slippery Rock's lead just six minutes before halftime. Carmella Simco found Mia Valerio with a pass outside of the box on the left side and beat Allman to the top left corner, giving SRU a 3-2 lead entering halftime.
Coming out of halftime, Slippery Rock found the net three more times via Battalini, Williams and Revetta with assists from Price, Paterline and Hill.
Slippery Rock ended the game outshooting Clarion, 28-5, including 13-3 in shots on goal. The Rock also took three corner kicks to the Golden Eagles' zero. Clarion led saves, 7-1, and committed more fouls, 9-7.
The Rock hit the road for another divisional contest noon Saturday at Dicks Sporting Goods Field against Seton Hill University.
