SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team scored four first-half goals in a 6-1 victory to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play Sunday against Lock Haven at James Egli Field.
The Rock improved to 1-1-0 overall on the season and 1-0-0 in the PSAC West, while the Bald Eagles fell to 0-2-0 on the campaign with a 0-1-0 record in the division.
With the result, SRU is now 8-0-2 in its last 10 games at James Egli Field with a +19 goal differential (25-6).
Slippery Rock benefited from six different goal scorers as well as 12 different players that earned at least one point.
The Rock saw four players score their first career goals as
Peyton Los,
Summer Hill,
Chloe Flynn and
Addison Bell found the back of the net for the first time, while
Jilly Deivert earned her first career assist.
Sophia Palermo and
Abby Paterline also found the back of the net for Slippery Rock, as
Lilia Battalini,
Lindsey Price,
Jordyn Constable,
Libby Earley and
Eden Williams all dished out one assist.
Seven of The Rock's 12 points came via freshmen and sophomores.
Leah Allman started in goal and earned the win for Slippery Rock. The senior made two saves before being substituted for in the 55
th while The Rock held a 4-0 advantage.
Rosie Willmott Joyce came in for Allman and made one save in 36 minutes of action.
The Rock started the scoring off a corner kick in the 22
nd minute. Battalini took the corner from the far side and bended the pass onto the head of Los, who found the top right corner, giving SRU a 1-0 lead.
Slippery Rock double its advantage just three minutes later when Price was in possession in the middle of the field and found Palermo with a pass, who slotted the shot in the bottom right corner, making it 2-0 SRU.
Approaching the final ten minutes of the half, Slippery Rock would strike two more times, giving itself a 4-0 lead going into halftime. In the 36
th minute, Deivert took a shot that deflected towards the back post and Hill was the first player to the ball as she found the back of the net. Four minutes later, Paterline took a cross from Constable and beat the goalkeeper with a shot to the bottom left corner after turning an evading the defense.
Lock Haven got on the board first in the second half when Allison Green assisted Maci Shaffer for her first goal of the season in the 58
th minute, cutting Slippery Rock's lead to 4-1.
20 minutes later, Flynn flew to the past post and deposited a cross from Earley, regaining Slippery Rock's four goal advantage, 5-1.
Bell closed the scoring in the 87
th minute on a similar goal to Flynn's off a cross to the back post from Williams.
SRU outshot LHU 29-5 overall and 10-4 in shots on goal. The Rock took eight corners compared to the Bald Eagles' one and each team committed five fouls.
Slippery Rock returns to action with a PSAC West contest 4 p.m. Wednesday against Edinboro at James Egli Field.
