INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 28 Slippery Rock University women's tennis team remained locked in at second place in the latest batch of NCAA Atlantic Region rankings released Wednesday by the DII Women's Tennis Committee.
Â
The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and select independent institutions within the region's borders.
Â
All three conference tournament champions within the region receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with the next four highest ranked teams in the final regional rankings receiving at-large bids.
Â
The official release of the 48-team field for the 2026 NCAA Tournament will be announced 8:30 p.m. May 4 on NCAA.com.
Â
There are multiple factors taken into consideration to determine the playoff fields, including in-region winning percentage, winning percentage against Division II opponents, in-division strength of schedule, in-region strength of schedule and results against Division II teams with records above .500.
Â
The latest regional rankings are identical to last week's list with Indiana (Pa.) and Slippery Rock holding the top two spots followed in the top five by Charleston, Fairmont State and West Virginia Wesleyan. Rounding out Wednesday's regional rankings were Frostburg State, Shaw, East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg.
Â
Only results through April 26 were considered in this week's rankings.
Â
As its spot in the rankings indicates, Slippery Rock has one of the best tournament resumes in the entire Atlantic Region.
Â
Slippery Rock's strong tournament resume includes ranking first in the Atlantic Region in in-region winning percentage (.909) as well being second in overall Division II winning percentage (.857), in-region strength of schedule (.552) and results against Division II opponents with an above .500 winning percentage (5-2).
Â
Slippery Rock, which was ranked 28th nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II top-50 poll that was also unveiled Wednesday, is 4-1 against teams ranked in the Atlantic Region with wins over Frostburg State, Fairmont State, Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan as well as a single loss to IUP.
 Â
Winners of four straight matches, Slippery Rock will meet East Stroudsburg in the semifinal round of the 2026 PSAC Tournament 1 p.m. Friday at the Burt Reese Tennis Center in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
Â
If victorious against the Warriors, SRU would square off against the winner of the other semifinal match - either Indiana or Bloomsburg - 1 p.m. Saturday in the finals with a conference tournament championship and the accompanying automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament at stake.
Â
Regardless of how Slippery Rock fares this weekend its spot in the NCAA Tournament is all but guaranteed.
Â
No stranger to the postseason, Slippery Rock has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 22 times dating back to the 1995-96 season. More recently, SRU won its regional and made a run to the Round of 16 in the 2025 NCAA Tournament for what was the program's seventh consecutive national tournament berth.
