INDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team was ranked second in the Atlantic Region when the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Committee unveiled the first ranked order list of regional rankings Wednesday.

The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and select independent institutions within the region's borders.

All three conference tournament champions within the region receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with the next four highest ranked teams in the final regional rankings receiving at-large bids.

Updated regional rankings will be released every Wednesday until the conclusion of the season. The official release of the 48-team field for the 2026 NCAA Tournament will be announced 8:30 p.m. May 4 on NCAA.com.

There are multiple factors taken into consideration to determine the playoff fields, including in-region winning percentage, winning percentage against Division II opponents, in-division strength of schedule, in-region strength of schedule and results against Division II teams with records above .500.

Indiana University (Pa.) was ranked first this week and followed by The Rock in second with the rest of the top five consisting of the University of Charleston, Fairmont State University and West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Rounding out the latest batch of Atlantic Region rankings was Frostburg State University at No. 6 with Shaw University, East Stroudsburg University and Bloomsburg rounding out the poll.

Only results through April 19 were considered in this week's rankings, meaning any matches from across the region that were played Monday and Tuesday will be included in next week's rankings.

As its spot in the rankings indicates, Slippery Rock has one of the best tournament resumes in the entire Atlantic Region.

Slippery Rock's strong tournament resume includes ranking first in the Atlantic Region in in-region winning percentage (.900) as well being second in overall Division II winning percentage (.846), in-region strength of schedule (.573) and results against Division II opponents with an above .500 winning percentage (4-2).

Slippery Rock, which was ranked 28th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association top-50 poll, is 4-1 against teams ranked in the Atlantic Region with wins over Frostburg State, Fairmont State, Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan as well as a single loss to IUP.

No stranger to the postseason, Slippery Rock has qualified for the NCAA Tournament 22 times dating back to the 1995-96 season. More recently, SRU won its regional and made a run to the Round of 16 in the 2025 NCAA Tournament for what was the program's seventh consecutive national tournament berth.

Slippery Rock concludes its regular season schedule 4 p.m. Wednesday against California (Pa.) at the SRU Tennis Courts. A victory over the Vulcans clinches a home match for The Rock on April 28 in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament.
