No. 39 Rock loses at St. Bonaventure, 5-2

The No. 39 Slippery Rock women’s tennis team had its four-match winning streak come to an end in a 5-2 loss Saturday at Division I St. Bonaventure.

OLEAN, N.Y. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team had its four-match winning streak come to an end in a 5-2 loss Saturday at Division I St. Bonaventure University.

The road non-conference setback moves The Rock's record 8-2 overall, while the host Bonnies improve to 3-16.

Leading The Rock's efforts in the match were Dari Sakhanova and Nadia Rodewald. The duo won their third flight doubles match in addition to each earning singles victories.

Sakhanova and Rodewald have amassed a near perfect 17-1 doubles record, including nine consecutive wins. Individually, Sakhanova holds a 13-4 singles mark. Rodewald has won seven straight singles bouts to improve her record to 12-6.

The match started with The Rock and Bonnies trading 6-1 doubles success as Tamara Bachmann and Sara Parada earned a win in the top flight against Nicole Kempton and Alissia Kivi only for Rodewald and Sakhanova to down Kelly Barnes and Gabriella Blumberg out of the third flight.

However, SBU earned the team doubles point when Kashish Bote and Sienna Smith edged Amaia Balaguer Brau and Tina Slovak, 6-4, from the second flight.

A comeback was not to be for Slippery Rock in single play. Saint Bonaventure opened the singles portion of the match with four straight victories to clinch the team win.

The top four singles flights all went SBU's way when Parada earned a 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory against Balaguer Brau in the top slot with flights 2-4 seeing wins by Bachmann against Kivi (7-5, 6-3), Smith over Kempton (6-2, 6-3) and Bote versus Slovak (6-2, 6-2).

The Rock's points in the match came courtesy of Sakhanova in the fifth flight over Blumberg (6-0, 6-4) and Rodewald from the sixth flight against Barnes (6-2, 6-2).

Slippery Rock returns home, and back to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition, when it hosts Edinboro 1 p.m. Sunday at the SRU Tennis Courts.
