SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team returned to its winning ways with a successful 7-0 shutout victory against Edinboro Sunday at the SRU Tennis Courts.
Â
The Rock's latest victory improved their record to 9-2 overall while maintaining an undefeated 4-0 mark inside the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division.
Â
SRU is now assured of securing the program's eighth consecutive winning season regardless of outcomes through the rest of the year. Additionally, The Rock's 9-2 record is tied for the fourth-best 11-match start to a season in program history.
Â
Due to Edinboro only having four available athletes, SRU started the doubled portion of Sunday's match with a default win out of the third flight.
Â
The Rock claimed the first point of the day thanks to a 6-1 win out of the second flight by
Tina Slovak and
Amaia Balaguer Brau over Neza Rogl and Luciana Ponce.
Â
SRU's No. 1 doubles pairing of
Nicole Kempton and
Alissia Kivi – the 29th ranked doubles team in the nation – sent Slippery Rock into the singles portion of the match with all the momentum courtesy of a 6-3 first-flight victory against Sofia Benito and Cecilia Carayol.
Â
Slovak and Balaguer are now 13-4 on the year overall, while Kivi and Kempton pushed their collective doubles record to 17-9. Both pairings are 8-3 in dual matches.
Â
Because of Edinboro not having six athletes, Slippery Rock's lead balooned to 3-0 at the start of the singles portion of the match due to default victories from the fifth and sixth flights.
Â
Kivi officially clinched the team victory for SRU when she bested Ponce in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in the second flight. Sunday's result moves Kivi's record to a stellar 17-4 in 2025-26. Following Kivi's lead, Slippery Rock closed the match by posting victories from the first, third and fourth flights.
Â
Balaguer Brau earned a 6-4, 6-1 win out of the top flight versus Carayol, improving to 15-6 in the process. Kempton battled her way to a 7-5, 6-2 third-flight win against Benito in what was her 14th win of the year. The final result of the day saw
Nadia Rodewald stretch her winning streak to eight matches via a 6-2, 6-4 win against Rogl.
Â
Sunday's win sets up a key match 4 p.m. April 15 on the road at Indiana (Pa.). As is the case in most years, the winner of The Rock – Crimson Hawks match will likely decide the PSAC West regular season champions.
Â
SRU and IUP last played in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament with The Rock beating the Crimson Hawks, 4-3, to punch their ticket to the Round of 16.
