No. 7 Rock runs by Gannon 24-2 in PSAC opener

No. 7 Slippery Rock jumped out to a 21-0 lead on the way to a dominant 24-2 win over Gannon Saturday in the PSAC West opener.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The seventh ranked Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 21-0 lead on the way to a dominant 24-2 win over Gannon University Saturday in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opener from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The Rock scored nine goals in the first period and put the game into a running clock situation just 34 seconds into the second quarter in what was the most convincing victory of the year. SRU extended the advantage to 17-0 at halftime before pulling most of the starters for the second half and cruising to the 24-2 win.
 
Slippery Rock improves to 8-0 on the year and 1-0 in PSAC West play. Gannon drops to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in PSAC action.
 
The Rock were dominant in all phases Saturday and scored an efficient 24 goals on 32 total shot attempts. SRU finished with advantages of 32-11 in shots, 16-12 in draw controls, 25-11 in ground balls and 17-9 in caused turnovers. The defense limited Gannon to a season-low two goals and held the Golden Knights to just 1-of-9 on clear attempts.
 
Every available player on the SRU roster appeared in the game and 14 different players recorded points in the game.
 
Grace Rotter led the attack with a season-high seven points on four goals and three assists while only playing the first half. Abby Fink added a hat trick and two assists, Isabella Buono scored four goals and Reagan Richeson netted a hat trick to give SRU four players with at least three goals. Maddie Blazey tallied one goal and two assists, Cadyn Eismann scored two goals and Ava Dossier and Shannon Von Kaenel each scored one goal and handed out one assist to give The Rock eight players with multiple points.
 
Caitlyn Kelly, Amara Langstaff, Lauren Petty, Laurelle Surette and Aleigha Dubroc each scored one goal and Ella Koslowski handed out one assist to round out the scorers. Dubroc's goal marked the first of her career.
 
Paige Jenkins led the stellar defensive effort with four caused turnovers, six ground balls and three draw controls. Von Kaenel led all players in the game with nine draw controls.
 
Lily Ventresca was flawless in goal, recording three saves in the opening half and allowing no goals. Ava Drath played the second half in goal and allowed two goals to go along with two saves.
 
Isabella Veltre led Gannon with one goal and one assist. The Golden Knights played three different goalies in the game. Allison Lerch took the loss after allowing 16 goals and recording three saves.
 
Saturday's win marked the 18th straight regular season win for SRU, its 15th straight PSAC Western Division win and its 16th straight win at home.
 
The Rock will hit the road next week for a pair of PSAC West matches, first visiting Edinboro Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game before traveling to Indiana (Pa.) Saturday for a noon game.
